I came to Barclays for a career, and having previously worked for a large car company, I made it clear at my interview that I was looking to make my mark in the business. Two years and two promotions later, and here I am – an Area Manager.
I’m so grateful to the people I met during my first few weeks at Barclays. They advised me on which committees to join and how to raise my profile. Because of that, I was in a strong position to apply for a senior role when one became available.
As an Area Manager, my focus is on developing my team. Each day I’ll have a meeting with one of the sellers and discuss their goals and objectives. Then I’ll observe their work to see how they’re getting on and suggest any improvements. It’s really rewarding taking someone new into the business, training them the Barclays way and then watching them find their feet.
Barclays is the perfect place to be if you’ve got a get-up and go attitude and are looking to keep moving forwards. When you join, you know you’re becoming part of a company that just keeps on growing, particularly the mortgage division where we’re seeing a constant stream of new products being introduced. There’s no doubt about it – we’re here to stay.
It was over 30 years ago that I joined Woolwich, before it merged with Barclays. In that time I’ve been a Cashier, Branch Advisor and Branch Manager and worked part time whilst raising my family. I’m now a Mortgage Advisor, and have been for the last 15 years. Along the journey I’ve studied for my CeMAP qualification, which was supported and funded by Barclays.
On a typical day, I like to organise about three mortgage appointments, each ideally lasting two hours. It’s all about spending quality time with the customer, so before anyone comes in, I do a pre-qualification interview over the phone. This means that they arrive with all the right documentation and it really speeds up the process. If everything’s organised and well monitored, then I can give my customers the best possible service. Something I pride myself on!
Whilst you’ve got to have a good eye for sales opportunities, being a people person and a good communicator are the most important skills for this job. You’ve got to want to do the best for the customer, after all they come to you because they need your expertise. Even if I can’t help, I know one of my colleagues in another area of the business might have just the right product or solution. In fact, you often feel more like a friend than a Mortgage Advisor here. Only the other day a lady requested an appointment with me, simply because I’d completed her mum’s mortgage – what a recommendation.
I joined Barclays over nine years ago with no banking experience (just a love of maths!). I began my career right at the foot of the ladder, processing cheques in the back. Since then I’ve journeyed across the business from Cashier to Corporate Banker, and even had a year’s sabbatical in America, before finally becoming part of the Mortgage team.
I studied for my CeMAP during my daily commute and I had some competitive job offers from other companies. But after seven years, I knew Barclays was where I wanted to stay. It was a great decision because they’ve never held me back and have encouraged me to progress at my own speed. I feel safe in the knowledge that the Retail Mortgages team is protected by the rest of the business. Our customers already have a great trust and respect for the brand and will often come to us before their estate agent. This means we get leads from the rest of our branch colleagues, who book us appointments. Plus I’m lucky enough to still have some contacts from my days in the corporate banking world.
I love my job, it’s so much more than a ‘sales’ role. For me it’s all about helping people. They come to you looking for advice that will keep their investment safe in the future. And there’s nothing more rewarding than when a customer’s successfully bought their new house and stops by to say thank you.
